When a dental cavity goes untreated, it is possible for an infection to creep into the inner part of the tooth. An infection between the gum and tooth or at the root of the tooth is referred to as an abscessed tooth. If a tooth is cracked or chipped in a way that allows bacteria to enter the tooth’s interior, it can become a painful abscess.
Getting rid of an infection is a priority. Your dentist will save the natural tooth if possible. Since a root canal allows for the removal of the infected pulp and drainage of the abscess, it is one viable treatment for many patients. As it takes the source of infection out. Seek treatment as soon as you suspect an abscessed tooth is the culprit of your mouth pain.
Severe tooth decay is the most common cause of tooth abscess, but it is not the only guilty party. Trauma, such as cracks, chips, or breaks can open the area up for infection. Sometimes, gingivitis and peridontitis lead to an abscess between the gum and the tooth, as well as in the root area.
When the infection is in the pulp of the tooth, it is possible for it to spread into the jawbone surrounding that tooth. The result is one heck of a toothache that won’t quit! Whether it is sharp, shooting pain or a gnawing throb, intense pain is one indication of an abscessed tooth.
Keep a lookout for these other symptoms:
Be sure you brush for two minutes at least twice per day, and floss once. Follow that up with an antiseptic fluoride rinse for even more protection against bacteria. Schedule and keep your twice yearly cleanings and check-ups at Floss Dental in Surrey, BC.
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and be sure to replace your brush when the bristles fray, about every 3 – 4 months. If your drinking water is not fluoridated, talk to Dr. Kolar and his team about your options. Eat a healthy, balanced diet and avoid snacking on sugary foods between meals.
Try doing warm salt-water rinses to help relieve the pain and discomfort. You can use over-the-counter pain meds like ibuprofen or acetaminophen to provide some pain relief before you get to the dentist.
