Teeth Cleaning & Exam

What to Expect During a Dental Exam and Cleaning Visit

The most important part of every visit to the clinic is a thorough, in-depth cleaning performed by one of our experienced dental hygienists. They will carefully remove harmful plaque and other buildup from your gum line and take out buildup in the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth. When that’s finished, they will polish and floss your teeth to leave your mouth tasting great and your teeth shining and smooth.

As part of your regular exam we will take some low dose X-rays to see your teeth and jaw bones. X-rays are an adjunctive diagnostic tool which help the dentist to find any hidden issues not visible to the naked eye.

After reviewing  your X-rays the dentist will go over your medical history and then do a thorough exam, tooth by tooth  looking for any small cavities that may be forming and other possible signs of trouble, so that any potential problem can be addressed before it turns into something bigger.

What is gum disease and how to prevent it?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a condition that affects the tissues and bones that support the teeth. It is caused by the buildup of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on the teeth. If not removed, plaque can harden into tartar (calculus), which can only be removed by a dental professional.

There are two main stages of gum disease: Gingivitis and Periodontitis. Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease and is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. It is reversible with proper oral hygiene. Periodontitis is the advanced stage of gum disease and occurs when the gums and bones that support the teeth become infected and damaged. It can lead to tooth loss if not treated.

To prevent gum disease, it is important to practice good oral hygiene, which includes:

Do dental cleanings hurt?

No, cleanings are typically a comfortable and pain-free experience.  Our hygiene team performs a painless cleaning to remove built-up plaque, clear away stains, freshen breath, and give you a perfectly clean and happy smile. They will also provide you oral hygiene instructions and show you how to brush your teeth the right way.

What Is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that can be found in water, soil, plants, rocks and air.

Fluoride is commonly used in dentistry to strengthen enamel, which is the outermost layer of your teeth.  The Canadian Dental Association recognizes and supports the use of fluoride in preventive treatments and as part of daily care products.

Fluoride varnish can be applied to both baby teeth and adult teeth by a dental professional. The process involves painting a varnish containing fluoride onto the surface of the tooth twice a year to prevent decay. This is usually applied after the regular teeth cleaning appointment.

How often do I need my teeth cleaned?

It is generally recommended that people have their teeth cleaned by a dental professional at least twice a year, or every six months. This is often referred to as a “regular cleaning” or “prophylaxis.” People with gum disease or other oral health issues may need to have their teeth cleaned more frequently.

If you have any concerns about how often you need teeth cleanings or how to properly care for your teeth, call us today at 778-565-3368 or book online to see our experienced dentists. They will be able to assess your individual needs and provide recommendations for maintaining good oral health.
